Sonipat Municipal Corporation Steps Up to Tackle Waterlogging, Generators to Be Installed at Disposal Pumps

Following the recent unseasonal rainfall that caused severe waterlogging in parts of Sonipat city, the Municipal Corporation has taken proactive steps to prevent such incidents during the upcoming monsoon. The administration has decided to deploy generators at all disposal pump stations, and a ?15 lakh tender has already been allotted for the same.

A major waterlogging incident at Shani Mandir Railway Underbridge occurred recently due to non-functional motors. The failure in timely drainage led to streets and lanes being submerged in several feet of water, creating major public inconvenience.

Among the 28 identified waterlogging hotspots, the most affected areas include Shani Mandir Underbridge, Sarang Road Underpass, and nearby localities. Drainage is severely delayed due to plastic blockage in drains, often leading to traffic congestion.

Currently, the corporation has 5 tractors, 5 engines, 15 super sucker machines, and 20 pump sets, yet timely drainage remains a challenge. To address this, generators will now be installed at five key locations—Shani Mandir, Rathdhana STP, Model Town, Kabirpur, and Rai.

Executive Engineer Vishal Garg stated that the move will significantly improve water evacuation, especially from overflowing drains like Drain No. 6.

The Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Rathdhana, which has a daily capacity of 30 MLD, is under strain as the city now produces up to 45 MLD of wastewater, well beyond the plant’s design capacity. This overflow is contributing to waterlogging, highlighting the need for infrastructure upgrades.
