Despite 32,000 Challans, NH-44 Recklessness Continues; 288 Deaths Recorded in 2025

Human errors and reckless driving continue to cause frequent accidents on the highway. Overspeeding in fog, risky overtaking, not maintaining safe distance, using high beams instead of low beams, driving with broken tail lights, and taking turns without indicators are among the main factors responsible for crashes.
Overspeeding remains the single biggest cause of accidents. Despite strict safety measures, many drivers ignore road rules and continue to operate unfit, overloaded vehicles without reflectors, putting their own and others’ lives at risk.
NH-44 is considered one of the most unsafe stretches in the district. Nearly half of all road accidents reported in the district occur on this highway alone. Pedestrians crossing the highway frequently get hit by speeding vehicles. Five black spots on NH-44 still remain unaddressed because foot-over-bridges are yet to be constructed at these points. Labourers and commuters often cross on foot at these locations, making them highly vulnerable.
Another major reason for accidents is the presence of multiple entry and exit points along the same sections of the highway. Vehicles entering and exiting at the same time often collide, increasing the likelihood of crashes.

Traffic Police officials said the primary aim of the ongoing campaign is to ensure safe travel for citizens. DCP Traffic Narendra Kadian appealed to drivers to follow speed limits, maintain lane discipline, avoid improper parking and comply with traffic norms.
He emphasized, “Drive safe, stay safe. Following traffic rules protects your life and the lives of others.”
