Drug Addicts Will Be Removed, Indoor Sports Hall and Library to Be Built

The dilapidated building of the Working Women’s Hostel located in Model Town will be demolished to construct an indoor sports hall and a library. This step aims to clean up the area and free local residents from the nuisance of drug addicts who currently frequent the premises.

District Deputy Commissioner Sushil Sarwan, Municipal Corporation Commissioner Harshit Kumar, Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) Subhash June, and Assistant Commissioner Meenu Dhankhad visited the site after a request was made by Municipal Mayor Rajeev Jain and the Children Park Welfare Association. The officials assured that the building would be demolished and a new facility would be built as per the wishes of the colony residents.

Initially, in 2017, there was a plan to construct a Punjabi Bhawan at this location, but due to local opposition, then Cabinet Minister Kavita Jain decided to build a park instead. Later, the matter was raised in the District Grievance and Redressal Committee, after which the Sub-Divisional Officer and the Assistant Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation inspected the site and recommended demolishing the building to make a park.

Residents have expressed concerns that snakes and scorpions roam the premises and that drug addicts often gather there. They emphasized that even the Model Town layout designates this location as a park, so building a park would be the most appropriate decision.

Present at the site were K.D. Gupta, Satpal Taneja, Kulwant Hooda, Krishan Dua, Sanjay Nijhawan, Anil Seth, Madan Bawetra, and others.
