Sanitation Workers’ Protest Pays Off as Municipal Office Locked, Demands Accepted

Contractual sanitation workers, who had been protesting for the past ten days over their pending demands, locked the main gate of the Municipal Corporation office on Thursday morning. The action disrupted official work for nearly an hour. Upon receiving information, Civil Lines SHO Umesh Kumar and Assistant Commissioner of Police Amit Dhanakhar reached the spot and mediated between the workers and the administration.

Following discussions, the authorities agreed to the workers’ demands, after which the lock was removed and the protest was called off by afternoon. Mukesh Tank, president of the Contract Sanitation Workers Unity Forum, stated that no decision had earlier been taken regarding the reinstatement of removed workers or the payment of ESI and EPF pending for the last four months. He alleged that despite repeated assurances, the contractor had refused to release the dues.

After police intervention and assurances from senior officials, a meeting with Joint Commissioner Meetu Dhanakhar and ACP Amit Dhanakhar concluded with an agreement that the removed workers would resume duty from Friday. It was also decided that their names would be uploaded on the portal within a week. With this assurance, the sanitation workers ended their protest.
