Sonipat’s Kajal Clinches Gurj Title in Just 40 Seconds

At the three-day wrestling tournament organised by the Shri Jagdamba Devi Pankha Dangal Committee at the Ramlila Ground, women’s Gurj wrestling matches were held on Saturday. The final bout featured Sonipat’s wrestler Kajal and Karnal’s Karn Stadium wrestler Vanshika. Kajal emerged victorious within just 40 seconds, pinning Vanshika to claim the Gurj title.

Kajal received the Gurj along with a cash prize of ?14,000 from the committee, while runner-up Vanshika was awarded a memento and ?7,000. Before the final, the semifinals took place. Vanshika defeated Kanisha from Muzaffarpur in 1 minute and 20 seconds. In the other semifinal, Kajal overcame Lakshita from Sita Mai, Karnal, after a close contest, pinning her in 1 minute and 12 seconds.

Committee President Ramdhan Kamboj said that wrestlers from Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh showcased their strength in the competition, with women wrestlers also participating enthusiastically. Senior Vice President Palaram Pehalwan shared that dangals have been organised across the country for decades and that each member of the committee contributes with dedication every year. Many dignitaries and committee members were present on the occasion.

International Achievement:

Sonipat’s Kajal has also won a gold medal at the Under-20 World Wrestling Championship held in Samokov, Bulgaria, in August 2025. She defeated China’s Liu Yuki 8–6 in the 72 kg final, earning her second consecutive world championship gold. She had previously won the Under-17 world title in 2024.
