Ashoka University Professor Ali Khan Mehmoodabad Detained by Police; Laptop and Mobile Seized

Associate Professor Ali Khan Mehmoodabad from Ashoka University, located in Rajiv Gandhi Education City, Rai, was taken into custody by the police and brought to Delhi for investigation. His laptop and mobile phone have been seized as part of the evidence-gathering process.

Two FIRs were filed against Prof. Khan for allegedly making controversial remarks on social media around May 7 regarding Operation Sindoor, particularly targeting the roles of female military officers Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh.

The Chairperson of the Haryana Women’s Commission, Renu Bhatia, had issued a notice on May 12, stating that Prof. Khan had made communal and inflammatory comments against the Indian Army and the government. He allegedly used terms like "genocide," "inhumanity," and "hypocrisy" while questioning the intent behind the military operation and the involvement of female officers.

Despite being summoned to present his side, Prof. Khan did not appear before the commission, even when the chairperson visited the university. Consequently, a complaint was filed with the DGP, and an FIR was registered at Rai police station.

Additionally, Yogesh, the sarpanch of Jatheri village, filed a separate complaint, accusing Prof. Khan of undermining national security and inciting public sentiment during a sensitive time.

Based on these complaints, two cases were registered. Prof. Khan was arrested under the FIR filed by the Women’s Commission and was remanded to police custody for two days.

On Monday, Rai police took him to Delhi and seized his mobile phone and laptop, which will now be examined for digital evidence related to the case.
