Fighting for Justice is a Fundamental Right of Every Citizen: Justice Meenakshi I. Mehta

A national conference on the Indianization of the legal system was held at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Law University in Rai, Sonipat. Justice Meenakshi I. Mehta of the Punjab and Haryana High Court inaugurated the event by lighting the ceremonial lamp. The conference was chaired by Vice Chancellor and retired DGP Ashok Kumar.

Legal scholars, advocates, judicial officers, academicians, and police officials from across the country participated both online and offline. A book on the Indianization of the judiciary was also launched during the conference. Justice N. Kotiswar Singh of the Supreme Court of India unveiled the statue of Lady Justice in the university campus.

Justice Meenakshi I. Mehta emphasized that the right to fight for justice is a birthright of every citizen, and just as God treats everyone equally, the judicial system should be impartial and accessible to all. Vice Chancellor Ashok Kumar stressed the need to liberate India’s legal system from colonial influence and evolve it based on Indian values. He said the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 marks a significant step in this direction.

Justice Mehta added that the BNS-2023 will replace colonial-era laws and make justice more effective. In this session, legal experts from prominent institutions such as Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University, JNU, Punjab University, Delhi University, and others shared their insights.

In the second session, Mukesh Garg, member of the Electricity Regulatory Commission, stated that the new legal codes, including BNS, civil security code, and evidence law, will make judicial procedures faster and more transparent. Key speakers included Indrajit Mehta, Dr. Vikram Singh (former DGP of UP), and other renowned academics and officials.

The third session focused on the use of technology in judicial decision-making, where Prof. Devendra Singh from Punjab University highlighted the importance of digital courts, video conferencing, and data security. Speakers included Justice Deepak Gupta, Dr. Pavan Duggal, CEO Amitabh Nag from Bhashini, Shailesh Tripathi from HP India, and Police Commissioner of Sonipat Nazneen Bhasin.

Registrar Prof. Ashutosh Mishra concluded by saying that technological innovations can make the judicial process more accessible and efficient.
